When responsibility for health matters passed to the Scottish Executive post devolution, we were tasked with creating a new name and identity for the NHS in Scotland. Clearly a highly sensitive project, the brief asked us to consider a name and mark which would be instantly recognizable, easily accessible and would provide a visual framework within which every NHS provider could be seen as the local delivery point of the national brand.
The resulting mark strongly and clearly identifies all NHS services, wherever they’re delivered. Blue communicates health and the pairing of navy with cyan reflects a balance of stability and modernity. The symbol itself suggests care, support and unity, while the font, Stone Sans, was selected for its legibility at all sizes.
This project subsequently won an International Design Effectiveness Award in 2002.
